Congratulations 2009 Graduates! Have a great summer and see you in the Fall!

Children's Trust Fund of the State of Michigan
The Children's Trust Fund (CTF) of the State of Michigan is in great need of more volunteer reviewers to help determine which Michigan agencies will be receiving $100,000+ grants.  Students who've taken a research design course may be most appropriate to volunteer

The grant applications will be available to review online April 9th, 2009.   Reviewers must be able to attend the face-to-face meeting in Lansing on May 4th, 2009.  Your milege will be reinbursed to you by the State of Michigan.

It is a commitment, as volunteers have three weeks to comprehensively review applications, which may take a total of 4 to 8 hours (or more- depending on the number of grant applications to review).  See below for more information.

How to Write a Curriculum Vita - February 19, 2009

Image
Dr. Neely
On Thursday, February 19, 2009, Psi Chi hosted an informational workshop on “How to Write a Curriculum Vita”. Oakland University Psychology majors gathered to listen as Dr. Lynn Neely headed the workshop, focusing on what to do and what not to do when writing a curriculum vita.  Students were informed on the uses of a curriculum vita as well as the basic skeleton of mandatory information.  It is a good idea to ask anyone you know if they happen to have a CV, so you can get some ideas.  The best way to create your own is to look at many different curriculum vitae in order to get a feel for what a professional CV looks like.  Dr. Neely advised students attending the workshop to start a CV now and their experiences as they happen, ensuring one does not forget any information. Be sure to ask for assistance from a faculty member and ask several different people for their critiques before submitting your CV to graduate schools.

Dr. Williams
On February 10th, students gathered in the Lake Superior room 1B of the OC for a presentation by Dr. Keith Williams titled, A Rat Model of Alcohol Relapse:  Effects of Repeated Cue Exposure in Conjunction with Pharmacotherapy.  Dr. Williams started off the presentation with some background information of what particularly he does in his lab and of the problems of alcoholism and abuse in the United States, in which deaths from alcohol related accidents are around 85,000 deaths per year.  Next, Dr. Williams explained his research.  His previous research focused on relapse models in rats, he found when a previously extinguished alcoholic rat was reinstated with the alcohol addiction cues, the drug Naltrexone blocked this cue-conditioned reinstatement.  This drug could help prevent recovering alcoholics from relapsing back into alcoholism.  After, Dr. Williams talked about his current research project.  Dr. Williams now is targeting specifically the adrenal system to block the incentive of alcohol related cues in hopes to further reduce alcoholism relapse.  Dr. Williams concluded his presentation with aspirations of further research and thanking everyone for coming.

How to Succeed on the GRE - January 29, 2009

Dr. Stewart and Students
On Thursday, January 29, 2009, PSI CHI hosted its informational workshop on How to Succeed on the GRE. Oakland University Psychology majors gathered to listen as Dr. Robert Stewart highlighted the skills assessed on the Graduate Record Exam.  Students were able to learn the three major areas measured, including Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing.  Dr. Stewart gave tips of how to prepare for this often mandatory exam for entrance to graduate school.

There was great response and interest shown by the attendees.  Students may think that a good strategy for prepping for the GRE is traditional study methods, but this method has proven not to be very successful. More important, students are better off knowing what to expect from the structure and timing of the test. If you happened to miss this opportunity for information, you can pick up a copy of the handout in at Pryale Hall.  Free practice tests and review guides are provided at www.ets.org.

Image
Dr. Kozak and Students
Getting accepted into graduate school can be overwhelming.  Several questions arise for undergraduates regarding GPA, GRE test scores and even which classes one should take to increase their chance of being accepted into these highly competitive schools.  Forty students attended the “How to Get into Graduate School” workshop on January 24 and heard Dr. Kozak and Dr. McGinnis answered the aforementioned questions and many others.  Both professors shared their own experiences with the admissions process as well as general tips for students. Oakland undergraduates from diverse educational backgrounds attended the workshop and learned vital information that is relevant to any graduate program.  The workshop kicked off the winter semester which has several mini-workshops focusing on the aspects of the graduate admissions process.

If you were unable to attend the workshopyou can download the Grad School Workshop packet here.
