APA Summer Research Opportunity for Undergraduates -- Applications due February 12The APA Science Directorate is pleased to announce a partnership with the George Mason University Department of Psychology to host the 2010 Summer Science Fellowship (SSF). SSF aims to immerse advanced undergraduate students in the science of psychology by exposing them to the excitement and promise of the best of psychological science. Our principal objective is to inform these students about the science of psychology and its promise for the future, and help prepare them for the rigors of graduate study in psychological science. An expenses-paid, intensive summer training program, the SSF will place up to 10 talented students in the psychology laboratories of some of the most outstanding researchers in the Washington, DC area. The lab experience will be six weeks in length. The SSF program gives students an opportunity to explore the intellectual, personal, and social processes of scientific inquiry and to experience cutting-edge psychological research through hands-on laboratory activities. SSF offers promising students the opportunity to equip themselves with skills essential to succeed in graduate school, and gives students who plan to pursue advanced degrees in psychological science the opportunity to be mentored by nationally-known faculty. The 2010 program is expected to run from June 20 to July 31. APA will pay students a summer salary, as well as cover all travel and living expenses. This should make the program financially feasible for most college students. Eligibility is strictly limited to students who are currently juniors at US or Canadian colleges and universities. Applicants should be psychology majors, although students with related preparation may apply if they expect to enter a psychological science graduate program. International students enrolled in US or Canadian colleges are eligible; US citizenship is not required. Students from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. In 2010, placements may be available in the following areas of psychology. Final word on the involvement of specific faculty and labs will be made closer to the time of student selection.
For more information, including the application, visit http://www.apa.org/science/resources/ssf/index.aspx.
Research at University of Nebraska/LincolnThe National Science Foundation awarded our Law and Psychology Program a grant to house and train undergraduate psychology students interested in psychology and law. This Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program brings 8 to 10 undergraduate students to UNL to study law and psychology in our program for an academic year. Undergraduate students are provided with room and board, along with a stipend for working in our law and psychology research laboratories. They spend time working with our joint law and psychology doctoral (JD/Ph.D and MLS/Ph.D.) students. Our faculty will mentor these undergraduate students, helping them gain valuable experience to assist in preparing them for graduate school in psychology. This year University of Nebraska/Lincoln accepted 10 new students as our fifth class and they all finished the fall semester and are going on to the spring semester. Next year we will accept our sixth class of REU students beginning in summer of 2010. The website describes the program in detail. Please take a few minutes to go to the website, review it, and then pass the address along to any undergraduates in your department who might be interested in the program. The program description and application materials are available on the website, http://www.unl.edu/psychlawreu/.

Research Opportunity Available - United Psychological ServicesUndergraduate Psychology majors interested in getting research experience are needed. This research opportunity consists of data sorting, coding, and entering. This is the beginning phase of an extensive research project, which will result in a published book. No prior experience is necessary. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn the stages of research, and it would look great on a resume or a curriculum vita! There is an immediate need for students on Fridays, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturdays, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. We are asking interested students to commit to three months for one and/or both of these days. However, there is flexibility in the schedule and we are willing to make accommodations when possible. Please contact Maria at United Psychological Services at 586-323-3620, Monday through Thursday from 10am-5pm if you are interested and able! Project Description: This is a research project using a clinical sample of approximately 4,000 to 5,000 cases of children age five years through adulthood with testing and self-report measures. Testing is from approx 1990 through 2009. Testing involved the use of neuropsychological test measures, as well as intellectual assessment, and self-report measures to establish the diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. The purpose of the study it to assess different variables such as sleep, inattention, combined versus hyperactivity, symptoms seen on the testing versus the self-report measures, teacher versus parent measures, trends in the adult measures, adult symptoms and so on. A pilot sample done several years ago for girls and women using just the self-report measure isolated more symptoms of attention than hyperactivity when the diagnosis was ADD versus ADD plus. This promises to be a rather unique project given the use of neuropsychological evaluation along with self report measures and the lengthy time of testing as well as the number of cases involved.
